Rules for Ethnographic Discussion

1. Honesty: keep it  raw and intuitive.

  • Make every opinion you have as honest as possible.
  • Look for honesty in whatever you find.
  • Honesty begets honesty. Lies are a slippery slope.

2.Essence: find the core of and idea so you can anchor it to others.

  • Break down information and ideas to understand their meaning
  • Simplify
  • Break out your sheers and cut away the fluff.

3.Curiosity:Ask questions when you don’t understand something

  • Prod and pry until you make an ass of yourself; then dig deeper.
  • Casual conversation is good for dinner parties. The meat of most problems must be cut from the bone; sometimes violently.
  • Stay thirsty my friends (No one will ever completely understand everything).

4.Conflict:Agree to disagree

  • Argue with your friends; argue with strangers.
  • Know that you are right until you know you are wrong.
  • Like two samurai, honor your opponent by defeating him in battle.

5.Use rules as guidelines. (Except for this one)

  • Seek perfection; never arrive at it.
  • Preach doubt.
  • Doubt Preachers
